The Canvas

In the meadow of an afternoon
Where quiet meets with peaceful,
An artist with his cotton canvas
Took his palette and his easel,

And with his heart felt inspiration
Searched a subject he could paint,
Upon his large vast bordered canvas
That stared back at him completely blank,

When in the distance he saw a farmhouse
That somehow caught his eager eye
And said to him this is the portrait
That reflects in me what I feel inside 

So picking up his brush in hand
To paint the choice that he had made
He suddenly found inside himself
A feeling resembling the word afraid

Frightened that he might not paint
As good a picture as he could,
Or not turn out as good a picture
That others might not think was good,

What if I paint a shade to dark?
Or paint in tones that are just too light
Or paint with colors that are just too tense
Or paint in ways that’s just too bright

So with his fears he sat all day
Until the sun began to set,
Then went on home with an empty canvas
And a feeling inside that spelled regret,
 
But the following morning he thought it over
And so rushed back without despair,
Only to find that special moment
Was gone and now no longer there,

For whatever moment life bestows us
That seems so special at the time,
Is really up for us to take
And reap from it what it provides.
